Remembering Mike Cooper: A Life of Athletics and Family

Michael Wayne “Mike” Cooper, 69, of Connersville, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Reid Health of Richmond.

One of three children of Wayne and Joan Boles Cooper, Mike was born September 15, 1956, in Greenfield, Indiana. He attended Rushville High School until his family moved to the family farm in Connersville, where he graduated from Connersville High School with the class of 1975.

An outstanding varsity athlete in high school, Mike excelled in basketball and track and field, holding a number of school records. He continued his education and athletic career at Cumberland College, studying Physical Education and Health. While at Cumberland, he was a standout on the indoor and outdoor track teams, specializing in the high jump. His career-best jump reached 7’2”. A decorated athlete, Mike was named to the NAIA Indoor All-American Team in 1976 and both the NAIA Outdoor and Indoor All-American Teams in 1977. He was also the 1st place winner at the 1977 NAIA Finals with a jump of 6’11”. Mike was inducted into the Cumberland College Hall of Fame in 2014.

On April 6, 1979, Mike was united in marriage to the former Debbie Balyo whom he met at Cumberland. Together, they shared over 46 years of marriage and raised two daughters.

Mike was a dedicated worker, besides farming on the family farm, he was employed for many years at Pilkington North America in Shelbyville. In his leisure time, he was a member of FFA and 4-H during his youth and continued to support local youth programs throughout his life. He found his greatest joy in spending time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren’s school and sporting events. He also leaves behind his faithful companion, his dog, “Dodge.”

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Cooper; two daughters, Jenny (Seth) DeArmond of Pittsboro, Indiana, and Mindy Cooper of Connersville; four grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Zoey Chomel and Allie Chomel, both of Connersville, and Cooper DeArmond and Connor DeArmond, both of Pittsboro. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; a niece, Morgan Cooper; and several other extended family members.

Family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home. Pastor Stan Howard will officiate.
