Leonard Eugene Ashwill, 89, of Rushville

Leonard Eugene Ashwill, 89, of Rushville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at Reid Health in Richmond.
One of the children of Paul and Lorene Wood Ashwill, Leonard was born on March 13, 1936, in Arthur, Illinois. He grew up with a strong work ethic and a love for his community, graduating from Fairview High School with the Class of 1954.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Leonard served his country on active duty from February 21, 1955, to February 20, 1958. During his service, he held the specialized role of Cryptologist, a position requiring immense discipline and technical skills. He held the rank of Specialist Second Class, and the attention to detail he homed in the service would define his later career and personal life.
Leonard was a man who knew the value of hard work and technical precision. He was employed as a Plant Engineer at Fayette Tool & Die, where he worked for many years before his retirement. Even in retirement, Leonard remained active, always willing to lend a helping hand to others and tending to his passions for gardening and farming.
Faith and fellowship were central to Leonard’s life. He attended Fairview Christian Church, and in his leisure time, he was a renowned figure in the muzzleloading community. For over 30 years, he served as the head of the Bill Large Shooting Match in Friendship, Indiana, and was a dedicated member of the Wahpanipe Muzzle Loading Club. His expertise and leadership in the sport were well-respected by all who knew him. He was also a member of the American Legion.
In August 1998, Leonard was united in marriage at Fairview Christian Church to the former Linda Hatfield Greene, who survives. Together, they shared a life filled with family, faith, and mutual support. He was previously married to Faye Wadle Ashwill, who passed away in 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Ashwill; two sons, David (Darlene) Ashwill of Apex, North Carolina, and Dennis Ashwill of New Palestine, Indiana; two step-sons, Darren Greene of Knightstown, Indiana, and Jason (Brenda) Greene of Dunreith, Indiana.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kami (Michael) Mitchell of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, Morgan (Chris) Grinnell of New Hill, North Carolina, and Jeremiah Ashwill of North Vernon, Indiana. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Brianna (Brennan) Howes of Walker, Louisiana, Bricklen (Megan) Pugh of Columbia, Tennessee, Kasslyn Pugh of Hammond, Louisiana, Harrison Grinnell of New Hill, North Carolina, Emilia Grinnell of New Hill, North Carolina, Isiah Ashwill of Rushville, Indiana, Alexis Ashwill, and Jeramy Ashwill, both of Whitesville, West Virginia.
Leonard was the proud great-great-grandfather of Mollie Howes, Charles Ashwill Howes, and Emmett Howes, all of Walker, Louisiana; and Madelyn Pugh and Levi Pugh of Columbia, Tennessee.
Survivors also include several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren: Lindsay Greene, Stephanie Greene, Blayne Greene, and Justin Greene; Abbigail Hall, Evan Parsley, Selene Prunty, Easten Greene, and Blair Greene; and a step-great-great-grandchild, Brayden Faulk of Columbia, Tennessee.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Faye Ashwill; a son, Mark Ashwill, who passed away on May 26, 2004; and a sister, Bernice Copp.
Family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2026 at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow in Dale Cemetery.
