Virgil J. Hendershott, 81, of Connersville

Virgil J. Hendershott, 81, of Connersville, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Reid Health in Richmond.

The son of Virgil E. and Martha A. Frye Hendershott, Virgil was born on May 16, 1944, in Linton, Indiana. He attended Arlington High School and was a proud graduate with the class of 1962.

A veteran of the United States Marines, Virgil served his country during the Vietnam War from May 1962 until November 1966. Having achieved the rank of Sergeant, he served as an Admiral’s Orderly and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for his dedicated service.

On May 6, 1967, Virgil was united in marriage in Rushville to the former Mary Frances Maas. Together, they shared over 58 years of marriage.

Virgil was a man of dedicated service to his community. He served with the Connersville Police Department for 33 years, retiring as a Captain in 1999. Following his retirement from the force, he remained active in the workforce, spending several years with Cinram in Richmond and working in the press room for the Connersville News-Examiner.

A faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, Virgil was also a member of the Connersville Fraternal Order of Police. In his leisure time, he was known for his love of animals and his commitment to his family.

Besides his wife of 58 years, Mary Frances Hendershott, survivors include two sisters, Linda Newbold of Loudon, Tennessee and Joan Temple of Morristown, Indiana; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil E. and Martha A. Hendershott; three brothers, Michael Hendershott, Leroy Hendershott, and David Hendershott; and a sister, Rita Hendershott.

In honor of Virgil’s wishes, no services are planned at this time. Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fayette County Animal Shelter in Virgil’s honor.
