Spartan boys basketball holds on against Oldenburg

The Connersville Spartan boys’ varsity basketball team improved to 8-3 on the season following a 60-51 non-conference win over the Oldenburg Twisters at the Spartan Bowl on Friday.

Connersville held a 15-8 lead after the first quarter and took a 27-18 lead into the halftime break. Two Spartans were in double figures with sophomore Jay McMullen contributing 22 points to lead all scorers. Senior Hunter Allen had 11 points for the Spartans.

A late Connersville turnover led to an Oldenburg layup to pull the Twisters to within one possession at 46-43 with 4:39 remaining in regulation. The Spartans closed with a 14-8 run in the fourth quarter. Senior Maddox Rees contributed 9 points for the Spartans. Junior Grady Simpkins had 7 points for Connersville. Sophomore Eli Laughlin collected 5 points. Sophomore Chase Corder and juniors Luke Brewer and Jacob Laughlin rounded out the scoring for the Spartans with 2 points each.

The Connersville junior varsity team defeated the Oldenburg reserves 41-27 on Friday. Oldenburg held a 8-5 lead after the first quarter. The JV Spartans went on a 17-5 run in the second quarter to take a 22-13 lead at halftime.

Connersville sophomore Kooper Montgomery had 10 points to lead all scorers. Sophomore Wyatt Gray and freshman Kayson McKinney contributed 7 points each for the Spartans.

Sophomore Owen Henderson collected 6 points for the Spartans with freshman L.J. Ellis and sophomore Jackson Marsh scoring 4 points each. Junior Evan Miller rounded out the Connersville scoring with 3 points.

The Spartans will host the Greensburg Pirates in an Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference matchup on Friday.
