Whitewater Valley Railroad Cancels 2026 Polar Express Train Ride Following Historic Flood Damage

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. — A cherished regional holiday tradition has been sidelined this year as the Whitewater Valley Railroad continues to assess and repair catastrophic damage sustained during last month’s unprecedented flooding.

Officials with the historic heritage railroad announced that the popular THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride will not operate for the 2026 holiday season. The decision comes in the wake of the severe weather event on August 13, when torrential rains sent the West Fork of the Whitewater River to an all-time record crest of 21.78 feet at Alpine.

Because the railroad’s scenic right-of-way follows the historic Whitewater Canal towpath parallel to the river between Connersville and Metamora, the tracks absorbed the direct brunt of the raging floodwaters. Rail beds suffered significant washouts, debris accumulation, and structural damage to line infrastructure and operating equipment.

“While recovery efforts are actively underway, the extensive damage to our tracks and equipment means significant work lies ahead before trains can operate again,” railroad representatives said in a statement. “We know how much this holiday tradition means to so many families, and we share in your disappointment.”

The cancellation marks a significant emotional and economic blow to the Whitewater Valley. Each November and December, the Polar Express draws tens of thousands of visitors from across Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky into downtown Connersville, serving as a major economic driver for local restaurants, retail shops, lodging, and seasonal community events throughout Fayette and Franklin counties.
