Friday night in Connersville the latest battle in the War on 44 was centerstage for the residents of the two neighboring communities. This year Connersville hosted the Rushville Lions; the Spartans entered with a 2–2 record while the Lions entered looking for that elusive first win of the season. The Spartans were looking to avenge a recent 3‑game winning streak by the Lions in the rivalry matchup.

Across more than six decades, the War on 44 rivalry had developed into one of eastern Indiana’s longest‑running football series. Digital records beginning in 1963 formed the reconstructed era, where Rushville led 22–9. From 1994 forward, the verified digital era showed Rushville ahead 22–10. Combined, Rushville led the rivalry approximately 44–19.

This year’s game opened with three touchdowns in rapid succession. Connersville returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, Rushville scored on its first play from scrimmage, and Connersville answered with a two‑play touchdown drive. On Rushville’s next possession, a penalty erased a 49‑yard touchdown run that would have tied the game. Rushville did not threaten to score again.

Rushville’s offense was led by Kai Pernell, who finished with 13 carries for 107 yards and one touchdown. Pernell also recorded 3 total tackles on defense. Additional rushing production came from O. Zachery (12 carries, 2 yards), K. Pavey (7 carries, 16 yards), A. Kamman (1 carry, 1 yard), B. Casebolt (5 carries, 14 yards), and R. Hatten (2 carries, 24 yards). Rushville finished with 40 carries for 164 rushing yards. In the passing game, the Lions completed 2 of 8 passes for 15 yards. Receiving totals were A. Kamman (1 catch, –1 yard) and R. Hatten (1 catch, 16 yards). Defensively, Rushville recorded 24 total tackles, 1 interception, and 1 fumble recovery.

Connersville scored eight total touchdowns: the kickoff return, two rushing touchdowns by Parker Flanigan, a rushing touchdown by Brayden Keller, two passing touchdowns to Flanigan, a passing touchdown to Luke Brewer, and a punt‑return touchdown by Flanigan.

Rushville trailed 14–7 after the opening sequence. Connersville scored 40 unanswered points, and the Lions finished with one touchdown and seven points.

The loss sent Rushville’s record to 0–5 on the season. The Lions are scheduled to travel to Centerville next week to face the 1–4 Bulldogs.
