The Connersville Lady Spartan soccer team hosted the New Castle Lady Trojans in their season opener on Wednesday.
The Lady Trojans got out to a 2 to 0 lead in the first half before Connersville’s Freshman Blakelynn Branstetter was able to convert a penalty kick to draw the Lady Spartans back to within one score. The game was heavily contested through the remainder of the first half with neither team able to score again.
In the second half New Castle was able to take advantage of a fortunate bounce to score again making the score 3 to 1 in the first five minutes of the second half. With just under 11 minutes remaining the Lady Trojans added a 4th goal to lead 4 to 1.
Connersville’s Leah Birgel would score a goal to cut the lead down to 4 to 2 in the final minutes. New Castle would hold on to the 4 to 2 win on opening night. The lady Spartans return to action on Thursday when they travel to Richmond to take on the Lady Red Devils at 5:30 pm.
