Franklin County overcame a ten-point halftime deficit to defeat Connersville 28-17 on Friday night, securing their 32nd win in the 38-game rivalry series.

Connersville controlled the first half, keeping Franklin County scoreless while building a 10-0 lead. Senior Parker Flanigan opened the scoring with a five-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, followed by a successful point-after kick. A late field goal extended the Spartans’ lead going into the locker room. Connersville’s early success was driven by a strong rushing attack, with Flanigan recording 73 yards and Brayden Keller adding 69 yards in the first half. The Wildcat defense was anchored by Steeley Galyen and Owen Baker, who led the team in tackles, alongside interceptions from Bodey Kruthaupt and Cayden Perleberg.

The game shifted in the third quarter as Franklin County’s offense found its footing. Junior quarterback Christian Swartz threw his first of three touchdown passes early in the period to cut Connersville’s lead to 10-7. Connersville quickly responded when Noah Patterson connected with Luke Brewer for a 35-yard touchdown pass, keeping the Spartans ahead. However, Swartz engineered another scoring drive, culminating in a second touchdown pass that tied the game at 17-17 later in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Franklin County took the lead for good. Swartz completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to put the Wildcats ahead 21-17. From there, the Wildcats turned to the ground game. Capitalizing on a fatigued Connersville defense, junior running back Parker Gillman accumulated the bulk of his yards in the final period. Wearing down the Spartans, Gillman broke loose for a 14-yard rushing touchdown to seal the 28-17 victory.

Gillman finished the night with 142 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Swartz completed 11 passes for 155 yards and three scores. Senior Brady Brunemann contributed 54 total yards for the Wildcats’ offense, which scored 28 unanswered points in the second half.

Looking ahead, Franklin County (2-0) travels to Rushville (0-2) next Friday for an Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference matchup. Rushville is coming off back-to-back shutout losses to Milan (56-0) and Shelbyville (51-0).

Connersville (1-1) hits the road to face Greensburg (1-1). Greensburg opened with a 39-14 loss to Shelbyville but rebounded with a 56-0 win over South Decatur. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs.
