Residents across the Whitewater Valley are lining up at local convenience stores today as the Powerball jackpot has officially hit an estimated $1.7 billion for the December 24 drawing. This represents the fourth-largest prize in the history of the game and the fourth-largest in U.S. lottery history.
The current jackpot run has broken records, marking the 47th consecutive drawing without a grand prize winner since September. While the $1.7 billion figure is the headline-grabber, a single winner tonight would have the option of a one-time lump-sum cash payment estimated at $781.3 million.
“Santa might have a gigantic present in his bag on Christmas Eve. This is only the second time in the game’s history with back-to-back jackpots exceeding $1 billion,” stated a Powerball spokesperson in a national release Wednesday morning.
Matt Strawn, Iowa Lottery CEO and Powerball Product Group Chair, added a reminder for holiday players: “While it’s exciting to see the jackpot climb to this level, please remember to play responsibly. A single $2 ticket gives you a chance to win while also supporting good causes in your community.”
Local retailers report a significant “holiday spike” in sales. If no one wins tonight, the jackpot is expected to shatter records heading into the New Year.
