Its solvent properties can loosen existing deposits, potentially clogging fuel filters and injectors, and it may affect older fuel line materials. Phase separation, where water and ethanol separate from gasoline, also can be a concern, leading to poor engine performance.
To address these issues, fuel additives formulated for ethanol blends offer several protective actions. These typically include corrosion inhibitors to protect metal parts, detergents to clean and prevent deposits in injectors and on valves, agents to manage moisture and prevent phase separation and fuel stabilizers to keep fuel fresh, especially during storage.

For instance, Lucas Oil offers its Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner, which the company states cleans components, stabilizes fuel and prevents corrosion when using various ethanol blends. Similarly, Liqui Moly markets its E10 Additive, claiming it improves combustion and provides protection against high water content specifically in E10 fuel. Many other brands also offer products with similar claimed benefits.

While modern engines are generally designed for common ethanol blends, an appropriate, quality fuel additive might offer benefits for older vehicles, equipment used infrequently, or fuel stored for extended periods. Crucially, always adhere to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations and the additive’s specific usage directions to ensure proper and safe application.
