Spartans Fall to Greensburg in Heartbreaker

The Connersville Varsity Spartans suffered a tough 5-4 loss to Greensburg on Friday, with the game decided on the very last play. The Spartans held a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, but a two-run double by Kirkley Lowe of Greensburg sealed the win for the home team.

Connersville was the first to get on the scoreboard. In the opening inning, Taylynn Selby laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought home one run, giving the Spartans an early advantage.

Greensburg answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Doubles from Aubrie Barnes-Petit and Tinley Klene pushed Greensburg ahead with a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans showed their resilience in the top of the sixth. Bre Brock executed a successful sacrifice bunt, allowing Connersville to tie the game at two runs apiece.

Momentum swung back in favor of the Spartans in the top of the seventh. A double by Maggie Spurlock and a single to left field by Addie Phillips each drove in a run, putting Connersville back in the lead, 4-3.

However, Greensburg mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Doubles by Harper Adams and the game-winning hit from Kirkley Lowe resulted in two runs, giving Greensburg the 5-4 victory.

Harper Adams earned the win on the mound for Greensburg. She pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and four runs (two earned) over seven innings while striking out 11 batters and issuing no walks. Taylynn Selby took the loss for the Spartans. The right-hander pitched six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, striking out seven, and walking two.

Offensively for the Spartans, Maggie Spurlock, Bre Brock, Addie Phillips, and Josey Selby each collected one hit. Spurlock, Brock, Phillips, and Selby also each recorded an RBI.

Greensburg accumulated a total of 10 hits during the game. Kirkley Lowe was a key contributor in the middle of their lineup, leading the team with two runs batted in and going 1-for-2 on the day. Harper Adams also had a strong offensive performance from the leadoff spot, collecting three hits in four at-bats for Greensburg.
