The Connersville Spartan baseball team split with the Anderson Indians in a non-conference double header at Connersville High School on Saturday.
The Spartans defeated Anderson 5-4 with a walk-off RBI single from junior Zaine Bentley to score sophomore Parker Flanigan in game 1. Flanigan scored off a 2-run home run from senior Aaron Kidd in the bottom of the first, and drove in senior Zander McHenry with a double in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior Landyn Geise had 1 RBI with sophomore Brayden Keller scoring 1 run. Bentley had 2 strikeouts in 3 innings on the mound for the Spartans. Kidd collected 5 strikeouts in 4 innings of relief work.
The Kidd home run gave Connersville a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. Anderson held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh with runs scored in the first, second, third, and fifth innings.
Bentley and junior Brody Shearer each had 1 RBI with Kidd and Flanigan scoring 1 run each in a 5-2 Connersville loss in game 2. Anderson led 5-0 before the Spartans got on the board with both runs coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. Connersville had the bases loaded with the winning run at the plate before the Indians could retire the side to secure the game 2 win.
Freshman Jay McMullen had 3 strikeouts in the start for the Spartans through 4 innings. Senior Noah Sizemore struck out 1 Anderson batter in 2 innings of relief work with senior Ayden Wenta collecting 1 strikeout in 1 inning on the mound for the Spartans.
Connersville will travel to Lawrenceburg for the first of 2 Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference matchups with the Tigers this evening. The Spartans will travel to East Central for an EIAC contest on Tuesday, and host Lawrenceburg on Thursday.
