Update: Fatal Fire Displaces Dozens at Connersville Apartment Complex: Investigation Ongoing

CONNERSVILLE, IN – Following the fire at The Crossings apartment complex on Sunday, March 16, 2025, the Connersville Fire Department has released an update on the ongoing investigation and the community’s response.

At approximately 6:23 PM, emergency responders arrived at the complex, formerly known as Turtle Creek Apartments, located at 3600 Western Ave., to combat a structure fire in a first-floor apartment within the “C” wing. Tragically, an occupant of the apartment was found deceased during the firefighting efforts.

Investigators from the Connersville Fire Department and the Indiana State Fire Marshals Office are continuing their work to determine the fire’s exact cause. While foul play is not suspected, investigators have stated that improper disposal of smoking materials cannot be ruled out at this time.

The fire resulted in the displacement of approximately 50 residents from 27 units due to heavy smoke that permeated all three floors of the “C” wing. Fayette County Emergency Management, in collaboration with the Fayette County Ministerial Society and the American Red Cross, quickly mobilized to provide assistance. Growing Branches Ministries opened its doors to provide immediate shelter, and Baptist Temple Church was transformed into an overnight shelter by the Red Cross.

The American Red Cross has assigned caseworkers to the affected families to help them navigate available community resources. Residents of the “C” wing who are still in need of assistance are encouraged to contact the Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS.

This incident has brought back memories of a previous fire at the same location, when it was known as Turtle Creek Apartments, on July 9th, 2013.
