The Connersville Spartan baseball team improved to 2-4 on the season following a 6-3 non-conference home win over the Yorktown Tigers on Saturday.
Senior Brody Shearer was 3-4 from the plate with 3 RBI and a solo home run. A Shearer RBI single in the bottom of the first scored senior Zaine Bentley and junior Kainen Curtsinger to give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead. Freshman L.J. Ellis held a no-hitter through 6 and 2/3 innings with 6 strikeouts in the start for the Spartans.
Junior Parker Flanigan scored 2 runs with junior Noah Patterson contributing 1 run for the Spartans. Flanigan scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second and off an RBI single from junior Brayden Keller in the bottom of the sixth. Patterson scored off a RBI single from senior Gavin Brannon to give Connersville a 6-0 advantage later in the sixth.
Yorktown’s Reid Butts got the Tigers on the board in the top of the seventh with a 2-out solo home run to break up the potential no-hitter. Yorktown’s Ethan Hellems had a 2-run home run to score Gabe Cox and cut the Connersville lead to 3 runs at 6-3. Bentley came in for relief to retire with 2 runners on to the Yorktown side with the tying run at the plate.
The Spartans will host the 4-2 Franklin County Wildcats in the first of 2 Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference matchups with Franklin County at 6:00 p.m. today. Connersville will travel to Franklin County on Thursday.
