Fred R. Marcum, 78, of Liberty, Indiana, passed away Friday, April 3, 2026, at his residence.
The son of Leslie Marcum and Pauline Wilson, Fred was born on October 23, 1947, in Louisville, Kentucky. He moved to the Oxford area in his youth and was a proud 1965 graduate of Talawanda High School.
Fred served two tours in Vietnam from 1967–1969 as a United States Army Explosive Ordinance Specialist. Following his initial active-duty service, he continued to serve in the Army National Guard and United States Army Reserve for nearly 30 years in transportation, ammunition and petroleum supply, and water purification specialties. Fred attained the rank of Master Sergeant (MSG) before his retirement in August 2000. He received numerous awards including the Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
In addition to his military service, Fred was a full-time State Technician for the Army National Guard, supporting the unit in Oxford, Ohio for more than twenty years.
On June 21, 1974, Fred was united in marriage in Oxford, Ohio, to Deborah Lancaster. Together, they shared over 51 years of marriage and raised their four children.
In his leisure time, he looked forward to annual salmon fishing trips to Lake Michigan with his friends. He loved teaching his children and grandchildren about nature, fishing, and wildlife, and spent countless hours transforming the family pond into something his future generations could enjoy for years to come.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Marcum; four children, Rebecca (John) Brooks, Derrick (Becky) Marcum, Kevin (Jennifer) Marcum, and Katie (Zach) Shutters; twelve grandchildren, Morgan Brooks (Brandon Baksh), Evan Brooks, Ella Marcum, Jack Marcum, Eli Marcum, Brooke Marcum, Ben Marcum, Jessica Marcum, Maren French, Connor French, Nathan Shutters, and Cami Shutters. He also leaves behind several cousins.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; two half-brothers, Frank Marcum and Ted Marcum; and two half-sisters, Dorothy York and Patricia Pierson.
A private service with Military Honors will be conducted at the convenience of the family. Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
