Starting tonight we are introducing a new Sunday evening tradition at the Voice. This will be a weekly look at the best of current television. We are beginning with two shows that have defined my viewing lately. One is focused on the West Texas oil fields and the other is on a relentless metropolitan ER.
Landman: The Power of the Fixer
Finishing Season 2 of Landman leaves you with one clear takeaway. Billy Bob Thornton is one of the few actors who can carry an entire industry on his shoulders. Playing Tommy Norris, a landman navigating the thin line between billionaire oil tycoons and the dangerous work on the rigs, Thornton brings a cynical and brilliant energy to every scene.
The second season successfully raises the stakes. It moves beyond the initial setup and leans into the complex family dynamics and high risk business maneuvers that make Taylor Sheridan’s writing so addictive. It did not just meet expectations. It exceeded them.
The Pitt: Realism Returns to the ER
On the other side of the spectrum is HBO’s The Pitt. For those who remember the early and gritty years of ER, this show feels like a long awaited return to form. Noah Wyle is phenomenal as a doctor who has seen it all. He provides a grounded and weary perspective on a healthcare system under immense pressure. The show’s pacing is relentless and often makes the hospital feel like a character itself.
The Verdict
Both shows celebrate competence. These are stories about people who are the best at what they do in impossible situations. If you are looking for a new series to start this week you cannot go wrong with either.
