Maintenance Department to Add Staff, Pursue Water Softener for Courthouse

The Fayette County Maintenance Department is looking to bolster its staff and address ongoing infrastructure issues at the county courthouse. Maintenance Director Josh Jarboe presented several personnel requests (144s) to the commissioners, including the hiring of Diemer Taylor as a full-time employee.

Taylor, who is currently participating in the local drug court program, was highlighted for his expertise in robotics and electronics. Jarboe noted that Taylor’s skills would be an asset for maintaining the electrical systems in both the courthouse and the jail.

“Kind of rotate them out every 11 months, get somebody that’s just starting, and… and then boot them out when they hit, like, phase five, start looking for a better job,” Jarboe said of the vision for the program. “Give them that extra support. I mean, it worked for me, so I’m not saying that it will for everybody else, but it did for me.”

In addition to personnel, Jarboe updated the board on plans to install a water softener for the courthouse, estimated to cost between $3,000 and $6,000. The installation is intended to combat mineral buildup in the building’s heating units. “It’s just been an ongoing battle. We fix it, and then it’s right back to it,” Jarboe said.
