Venezuela: Pressure Campaign Escalates with Maritime Strike
Tensions between Washington and Caracas have reached a new high following a U.S. strike on a port facility in Venezuela. The Trump administration characterized the action as part of an intensifying “maximum pressure” campaign aimed at the government of Nicolás Maduro. Simultaneously, U.S. Southern Command reported a separate strike on a vessel in the Eastern Pacific suspected of narco-trafficking, though officials in Caracas have condemned the move as an act of “unprovoked piracy” and a violation of national sovereignty.
The U.S. Treasury Department also imposed fresh sanctions on ten individuals and firms across Iran and Venezuela, alleging a clandestine trade of drones and ballistic missile technology. While Washington argues these measures are necessary to curb the proliferation of “deadly weapons” in the Western Hemisphere, critics of the policy suggest the escalation is primarily driven by a desire to gain leverage over Venezuela’s vast oil reserves amidst global energy fluctuations.
