Syria: The Shadow of ISIL Amidst a New Governance

Syria’s fragile transition following the fall of the Assad regime is being tested by a resurgence of ISIL (ISIS) activity. On Tuesday, U.S. Central Command announced that a nine-day military campaign resulted in the killing or capture of 25 ISIL operatives across central Syria. The operation follows a deadly “insider attack” in Palmyra earlier this month that claimed the lives of two U.S. servicemembers and a civilian interpreter.

While the new Syrian government has officially joined the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, the group is reportedly exploiting security gaps in the vast Syrian Desert (Badiya) to recruit new fighters. The interim administration is currently walking a tightrope, attempting to rebuild a shattered economy and unveil new banknotes while simultaneously deploying troops to coastal cities like Latakia to suppress sectarian clashes that ISIL sympathizers have sought to inflame.
