Fayette County, IN – A former president of the Fayette Central Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is reportedly the subject of a theft investigation, according to a police report filed in June 2025. The investigation was allegedly initiated after school officials raised concerns about what they believed to be suspicious use of PTO funds.
The investigation allegedly began in April 2025 after school officials reportedly discovered numerous purchases on PTO financial statements that did not appear to be school-related. According to the report, these transactions allegedly included purchases from various retail stores, gas stations, and a doctor’s office.
A report from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department details an investigation into the PTO’s finances, focusing on transactions allegedly made by the former PTO president, Janice Evans. The documents allege that Evans was the sole user of the PTO debit card under review.
Investigators allegedly uncovered tens of thousands of dollars in spending that they have deemed questionable. The report alleges a multiple withdrawals and purchases from a wide range of merchants, allegedly including Wal-Mart, Amazon, Kohl’s, and Turbo Tax.
During an interview with a detective in May 2025, Evans allegedly acknowledged her role as the PTO president. According to the report, when questioned about specific purchases, Evans allegedly identified several that were not for school purposes, including alleged transactions for tax preparation software. The documents also allege she confirmed the purchase of a Playstation 5 Slim console.
The report further alleges that Evans explained that some of the money from ATM withdrawals was allegedly used to purchase Apple gift cards for a gambling application. Regarding other alleged personal purchases, the report alleges Evans stated she would use the PTO card if she did not have the money and intended to pay it back.
The documents indicate that law enforcement officials obtained financial records through subpoenas.
Following the submission of the report to the Fayette County Prosecutor’s Office, Janice Evans was arrested in connection with the allegations. She has since been released on bond.
It is important to note that all defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
