CONNERSVILLE, IN – May 27, 2025 – Have you heard some news about buses in Fayette County lately? It might seem a bit confusing, but don’t worry! This article will explain what’s going on and tell you how you can still get a ride.
“Fayette Transit Indiana” is Closing
You might have seen a social media post from a group called “Fayette Transit Indiana.” It said they are shutting down for good on Friday, May 30th, 2025. They apologized if this causes any problems and told people to call a different number for bus rides: Whitewater Valley Regional Transportation at 765-458-7277.
Whitewater Valley Regional Transit is Now Running the Transportation
Here’s the main thing to understand: Even though “Fayette Transit Indiana” is closing, you can still get rides in Connersville and Fayette County!
A different company, called Whitewater Valley Regional Transit, actually took over providing most of the local bus services back on January 1, 2025. (You might have known them before as Union County Transit).
So, the bus services themselves aren’t stopping. The company in charge of the main service simply changed earlier this year.
This new system is designed to better serve people in Fayette, Union, and Wayne Counties. The main goal is to help people get to important places like doctor’s appointments, schools, jobs, and stores.
Need a Ride? Here’s What to Know:
- Who to Call for a Ride: Whitewater Valley Regional Transit
- Phone Number: 765-458-7277. It’s best to call ahead to schedule your ride. Sometimes, you might be able to get a ride the same day if they have drivers and buses available.
- When Buses Run (in Fayette County): Monday to Friday, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- Cost for a Ride (One Way):
- $2.00 if your trip stays within the city limits.
- $5.00 if your trip goes outside of the city limits.
- What the Bus Might Look Like: For a little while, the buses you see might still have “Fayette County” or “Union County” signs on them. They are working on updating the logos.
- Rides for People with Disabilities: They have buses that are easier to use for people who have trouble moving around (these are called ADA accessible).
- Special Medical Rides: If you use services like LCP, Verida, Modivcare, or Well Trans, you might qualify for free rides to non-emergency medical appointments.
- Where They Are Based: Whitewater Valley Regional Transit is run from the Union County Council on Aging office in Liberty, Indiana.
A Bit More About This Change
Earlier this year, on January 1, 2025, the Fayette County Council on Aging (FCCoA) stopped being the main local group that received government money to run public buses in our area. Whitewater Valley Regional Transit took over that role.
The FCCoA might still offer some of its own transportation services, but Whitewater Valley Regional Transit is now the main provider for most public bus routes.
They are also making plans to improve and possibly expand the bus service in the future, maybe even reaching into Franklin and Rush Counties.
So, What’s the Bottom Line?
Even though “Fayette County Transit” is closing down on May 30th, 2025, public bus service is not ending. You will still be able to get rides through Whitewater Valley Regional Transit.
If you have any questions or need to schedule a ride, just give them a call at 765-458-7277.
