Prepare for Potential Flooding: Franklin County Offering Free Sandbags Tuesday, April 1st as 6-8 Inches of Rain Expected
FRANKLIN COUNTY, IN – Heads up, Franklin County! Forecasts are calling for potentially heavy rain starting this Wednesday and continuing through the week, with possible accumulations of 6 to 8 inches. This significant amount of rainfall can quickly saturate the ground, leading to substantial runoff. To put that in perspective, just one inch of rain falling on a single acre equals over 27,000 gallons of water; 6 to 8 inches represents an enormous volume that can overwhelm drainage systems. Such conditions dramatically increase the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas, along small streams, and could also cause larger rivers like the Whitewater to rise significantly. Officials are urging residents and businesses to prepare for these potentially hazardous conditions.
In response, the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency (FCEMA) and the Franklin County Highway Department are teaming up to offer FREE sandbags and sand to help the community protect property. This offer is available to county residents, who may receive up to 100 bags per household, and county businesses, which are eligible for up to 200 bags each.
Sandbags can be picked up TOMORROW, Tuesday, April 1st, between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM at the Franklin County sandpit. This location is situated just behind the animal shelter, with the nearest address being 9076 Landfill Road. Please remember that you MUST bring your own shovel(s) and helpers, as you will need to fill the bags yourself.
This proactive measure aims to help mitigate potential flood damage. Given the amount of rain expected, residents and businesses in flood-prone areas are especially encouraged to take advantage of this offer. Stay informed about the weather forecast and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
