Connersville Apartment Fire Claims One Life, Displaces Dozens
A tragic fire at The Crossings Apartment Complex on Western Avenue claimed the life of one resident and displaced dozens of others on Saturday evening.
The Connersville Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 3600 Western Avenue at approximately 6:23 PM on March 16th. Upon arrival, Engine 3 firefighters found flames visible from the exterior patio door of a first-floor apartment unit. They immediately began efforts to extinguish the blaze.
Engines 1 and 4 arrived shortly after, assisting in the suppression and the evacuation of the 30-unit wing. Firefighters rescued five individuals from a second-story window. Tragically, the tenant of the apartment where the fire originated was found deceased inside.
“The fire suppression crew was able to quickly locate the tenant of the apartment who had unfortunately succumbed to injuries sustained from the fire,” stated the Connersville Fire Department in a press release.
All off-duty firefighters were called in to assist, and the Connersville Police Department helped evacuate the remaining three wings of the apartment complex. Fayette County EMS transported one firefighter for minor injuries and treated one tenant for smoke inhalation.
Due to heavy smoke damage, all residents of the 30-unit wing were displaced. The Fayette County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) provided logistical support at the scene. The Red Cross is working with local churches to provide assistance to the displaced residents.
“Fayette County 911 Dispatch did a great job coordinating all departments,” the fire department acknowledged.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office has been contacted to assist in the investigation of the fire’s cause, which is currently under investigation.
“We would like to send our condolences to the family of the victim in this tragic event,” the Connersville Fire Department expressed.
