Historic Helm Home Damaged in Early Morning Fire; Three Dogs Lost

An early morning fire has damaged a historically significant home in Connersville, a structure built in 1842 by Meredith and Mary Helm, overlooking the Whitewater Canal. At approximately 6:20 AM, Fayette County 9-1-1 dispatched the Connersville Fire Department (C-Shift), Fayette County EMS, and the Connersville Police Department to a structure fire in the 300 block of West 3rd Street.

This residence, a part of local history as the former home of Meredith Helm, a prominent figure in Connersville’s early development, suffered significant damage. Helm, who arrived in the area in 1811, was a key figure in the community, serving as an early merchant, the first president of the White Water Valley Canal Company, and the first president of the Fayette County Bank.

Upon arrival, first responders confirmed heavy smoke and flames emanating from the rear of the structure. Firefighters immediately initiated a search and fire attack. Due to the severity of the blaze and the building’s complex layout—a former single-family residence converted into a multi-unit dwelling—additional manpower was requested, prompting the immediate response of A-Shift and B-Shift firefighters.

The building’s unique configuration presented significant challenges. The original staircase to the upstairs was blocked, and while another unit offered access, the entire second-floor had collapsed prior to the fire, rendering it unsafe for entry. The fire rapidly spread to the upper levels and attic, compromising the structural integrity and forcing firefighters to evacuate the interior.

Crews subsequently gained access to the second story via ladders and by cutting through the roof, enabling them to extinguish the remaining flames.

One unit within the residence was occupied by two individuals and their five dogs. Tragically, while two dogs escaped to safety, three perished in the fire.

Firefighters remained on scene for approximately four hours, working to fully extinguish the blaze and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Connersville Fire Department’s Chiefs Office and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The American Red Cross was requested to provide assistance to the displaced occupants. No human injuries were reported.
