Connersville and Fayette County emergency crews faced a relentless barrage of calls this weekend as severe storms swept through the region, bringing high winds, downed trees, and multiple fires. Fayette County experienced a weekend of severe weather directly following the conclusion of Indiana’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week.
The chaotic weekend began with numerous reports of trees blocking roadways, forcing residents to find alternative routes. ‘We haven’t had a moment off today from the downed power lines, fires, and numerous calls for downed trees,’ said the Everton Volunteer Fire Department Chief, describing the overwhelming volume of incidents.
Among the most significant incidents was a structure fire on 3rd Street hill in Connersville, which required a substantial response from multiple departments. Shortly after, at 122 E County Road 340 S, behind a residential property, crews encountered a dangerous situation: downed power lines, a woods fire, and a transformer engulfed in flames. This incident further stretched already strained resources. Later in the day, a chimney fire in the 4300 block of State Road 44 East required additional attention.
The combination of high winds and heavy rainfall created hazardous conditions, leading to widespread damage and posing challenges for responders. Crews from across the city and county worked tirelessly to clear roadways, extinguish fires, and ensure public safety.
Downed power lines and debris may still present hazards. Officials remind the public to report any remaining issues to the appropriate authorities
