Union County Captures Sectional Golf Title on Home Course; Franklin County Ties for Second as Trey Hughes Advances

The Union County boys golf team captured the sectional championship on June 4, 2026, at Liberty Country Club, carding a winning team score of 328. The Patriots utilized their home-course advantage to secure the top spot ahead of a highly competitive regional field. Richmond and Franklin County finished in a dead heat for second place with identical scores of 333. Richmond officially claimed the runner-up position over the Wildcats by virtue of a fifth-player tiebreaker. Hagerstown narrowly missed an advancing team spot by a single stroke, finishing fourth with a 334, while Connersville rounded out the top five with a team score of 346. Centerville placed sixth with a 349, followed by Northeastern at 361, Rushville at 378, and Lincoln at 436, while Oldenburg Academy individual competitors also took part in the tournament.

Richmond freshman Wyatt Carter earned individual medalist honors for the sectional tournament with a dominant performance. Carter fired a stellar round of 72, which was highlighted by a 2-under-par 35 on the back nine to lead the entire field. Franklin County sophomore Max Foster took second place individually with a 77, and Union County senior Nick Watterson claimed third place with a 78.

With the top three teams advancing, Union County, Richmond, and Franklin County move on to the regional tournament as a group. Additionally, three individual players from non-advancing teams extended their seasons by earning individual regional berths. Hagerstown junior Noah Searcy and Connersville senior Trey Hughes both advanced by shooting matching rounds of 80, while Centerville senior Boston Beatty claimed the final individual advancing spot with an 81.

For the sectional champion Patriots, Nick Watterson paced the lineup with his third-place round of 78. Union County also received critical scoring contributions from senior Keegan Lathery and senior Landon Strait, who both turned in rounds of 83, followed closely by sophomore Jackson McCashland with an 84. Senior Kameryn Reuss rounded out the championship roster for the Patriots by carding an 87 on the afternoon.
