CONNERSVILLE, Ind. — The Connersville Spartans opened their 2026 campaign in dominant fashion on Friday night, putting on a clinic on both sides of the ball to overpower the rival Richmond Red Devils, 50-20.
The victory marks Connersville’s sixth consecutive season-opening triumph over Richmond, extending an impressive streak in the long-standing rivalry.
The Spartans set the tone immediately, erupting for 40 points in a high-octane first half that left the Red Devils reeling. Quarterback Patterson orchestrated an explosive aerial attack, finding Keen for a 60-yard touchdown strike and later connecting with Brewer on a 53-yard score through the air.
The Spartans defense and ground game matched the tempo. Flanigan swung momentum completely in the Spartans’ favor by snatching an interception and taking it all the way to the end zone for a pick-six. Flanigan was not done making an impact, later gashing Richmond’s defense for a 26-yard rushing touchdown. Additional short-yardage touchdown runs by Keller (5 yards) and Keen (1 yard) capped off a relentless 40-6 surge before the halftime whistle.
With a commanding lead and a running clock instituted for the second half, Connersville turned to its depth, resting key starters while maintaining control to seal the 50-20 victory.
Now 1-0, the Spartans turn their attention to another rivalry matchup in Week 2. The Spartans will travel to face the Franklin County Wildcats, who also enter the contest fresh off an impressive opening-night performance, defeating the New Castle Trojans 42-21.
