The Connersville Spartans fought until their final at bat on the road in Jay County, but a late rally fell just short in a 4 to 3 loss against Delta.
Delta jumped out to an early lead, matching Connersville with trades in the opening frame to lead 3 to 1 after one inning of play. The Spartans got on the board early when Brayden Keller doubled with one out and scored on a double by Zaine Bentley.
Following that active first inning, both pitching staffs settled into a rhythm. The scoreboard remained frozen at 3 to 1 through the second, third, and fourth innings as both teams struggled to string hits together.
Connersville chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kooper Grizzell led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Evan Miller, moving on to third base after a throwing error. Jay McMullen brought Grizzell home with an RBI single to cut the deficit. Parker Flanigan then drew a four pitch walk to put runners on first and second with one out, but Delta managed to get a pop out and a fly out to escape the jam. The standard five innings ended with Delta holding a narrow 3 to 2 advantage.
After a scoreless sixth inning from both sides, Delta managed to pick up a crucial insurance run in the top of the seventh. A lead off single, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single allowed Delta to push their lead to 4 to 2 heading into the final frame.
The Spartans refused to go quietly in the bottom of the seventh inning. Grizzell reached base safely again and came around to score on a clutch double by Flanigan, trimming the Delta lead to 4 to 3. Connersville could not find the final hit needed to bring Flanigan home and extend the game into extra innings.
