The Connersville Lady Spartans softball team (9–5, 7–1 EIAC) entered the week facing one of their busiest stretches of the season, with three weekday games leading into Saturday’s annual Spartan Rumble. By the time the dust settled, Connersville had swept all three opponents, played error free softball, and pushed its record to 12–5 overall and 9–1 in EIAC play, setting the tone for a strong finish to the regular season.
The week began Monday on the road at South Dearborn, where the Lady Spartans controlled the game from start to finish in an 11–0 win over the Lady Knights. Connersville broke through in the third inning with a string of singles, including a two run hit from Escobal that opened the scoring. The offense never slowed, piling up 14 hits while the defense turned two double plays and played a flawless game behind pitcher Selby. She delivered six shutout innings, allowing only three hits with no walks. Six Lady Spartans — Spurlock, Selby, Carpenter, Lainhart, Smith, and Escobal — recorded two hits each, and Selby led the team with three RBI as Connersville set the tone for the week.
On Wednesday, the Lady Spartans returned home and kept rolling with a 10–0 win over the Union County Lady Patriots. Connersville struck early with two first inning runs, including an RBI double from Fox and a sacrifice fly from Spurlock. After adding another run in the third on a Selby double, the Lady Spartans erupted for six runs in the fourth. The inning featured an RBI groundout from Fox, an RBI single from Escobal, a two run home run from Carpenter, and run scoring hits from Selby and Lainhart. Selby was dominant again, throwing five shutout innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. Connersville finished with 11 hits, led by multi hit efforts from Selby, Smith, and Escobal, while Selby, Fox, and Carpenter each drove in two runs.
Thursday brought the Lady Spartans back home for Senior Night, honoring the program’s senior class — including standout contributor Maggie Spurlock — before taking on the Lady Knights for the second time this week. South Dearborn struck first with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning, but Connersville answered in the fourth when Spurlock tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Selby followed with an RBI single to right to give the Lady Spartans the lead. Connersville added key insurance runs before South Dearborn’s Cutter hit a two run homer in the seventh to tighten the score, but Selby closed the door to secure a 5–3 victory and complete the season sweep. She finished her outstanding week with a complete game win, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out eight. Escobal led the offense with two RBI and a 2 for 3 performance, while Carpenter, Lainhart, and Escobal each recorded two hits as part of Connersville’s nine hit effort.
Across the three game stretch, the Lady Spartans outscored opponents 26–3, totaled 34 hits, committed zero errors, and received three strong pitching performances from Selby, who threw all 18 innings of the week. With momentum building and the team playing its most complete softball of the season, Connersville now turns its attention to Saturday’s Spartan Rumble.
This year’s Rumble features a loaded field: Hagerstown (15–2), Centerville (7–8), Hauser (6–10), Eastern Hancock (13–4), and Northeastern (12–2). Connersville will play twice on Saturday, opening the day in the 10 a.m. slot before returning later for their second matchup.
