Property tax invoices were officially mailed to Fayette County residents yesterday, following a delay that County Treasurer Jamie Durham says was caused by the state adjusting its timeline at the last minute.

According to Durham, the eleventh-hour changes from the state Department of Local Government Finance forced local officials to compress their work into a much tighter window to ensure tax rates and billing data were accurate. Residents should see the bills arriving in their mailboxes throughout this week.

Deadlines and Election Day

Even with the late mailing, the statutory deadlines for payment remain in place. The spring installment is due Tuesday, May 12, and the fall payment is due November 10.

Taxpayers should also keep the upcoming Primary Election in mind. Election Day is Tuesday, May 5, exactly one week before the spring tax deadline. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Payment Options and Office Closure

Durham noted that residents have several ways to settle their bills. Payments can be made in person at the courthouse, sent via mail, or placed in the secure drop-boxes located at the courthouse.

Following the deadline, the Treasurer’s Office will be closed to the public from May 13 through May 28. This closure allows staff to focus exclusively on processing the high volume of payments that arrive at the deadline. The office expects to resume normal business hours on May 29.

Residents who do not receive their statement by the end of the week are encouraged to contact the Treasurer’s Office at 765-825-1013.
