Spartan baseball falls to Richmond; still looking to find their footing this young season

The Spartan Varsity baseball team returned to action on Wednesday against the Richmond Red Devils. The Spartans are coming off a disappointing season opener at Hagerstown and were focused on getting win number one this season.

The Spartans could not find their footing on a cold wet night in the home opener, as Richmond would use a four run second inning and a masterful pitching effort by Zander Juday to defeat the Spartans 6 to 1 Wednesday night.

Getting the start on the mound for the Spartans was senior Brody Shearer. Shearer started the game off well as he would quickly dispatch by striking out the Red Devil’s leadoff hitter. However, a single by Weston Jones and then two walks sandwiched between a fly out, and Shearer would find himself in an early jam. Shearer would get out of a first inning bases loaded jam without allowing a run by getting Darwyn Roman to ground out to shortstop Noah Patterson.

For the Spartans in their half of the first would take advantage of a walk by starting pitcher Zander Judy to Parker Flannigan. Parker would quickly swipe second base and in the process Richmond’s catcher J’Lyn Lewis would sail the throw into center field allowing Flannigan to get to third base on error. Flannigan would score on a passed ball three pitches later.

Connersville for the second consecutive game committed an error that in combination with some walks would lead to the rally that would cost the game. Following a strikeout, a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases. Weston Jones would step in with one out and with a 1-0 count and would hit a deep fly ball that would reach the wall clearing the bases; but to make matters worse, the relay throw would go off target and bounce away allowing for Jones to score as well to give Richmond a 4 to 1 lead in the top of the second.

From that point on the story of the game was Zander Judy on the mound. He pitched very well, he kept the Spartans off balance for 5 innings allowing only a second inning single and three walks all while striking out 7. The only run he allowed was that unearned run in the first.

Collin Good would come in for the Spartans in the third inning and would pitch five innings in the game. The first three innings he held the Red Devils scoreless but would surrender an earned run in the sixth inning and then an unearned run in the seventh coming from another throwing error. Connersville would not threaten offensively following the first inning. Collin would end up with five innings pitched allowing two hits while striking out six and walking six. Gavin Brannon singled for the Spartans only hit. Parker Flannigan would have two steals in the game, giving him four stolen bases on the season so far.

The loss makes the Spartans 0-2 on the season, with plenty more tough competition on the horizon. The Spartans will play at home on Saturday against Silver Creek (0-1), game time is scheduled for 12 pm.
