FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONNERSVILLE, IN – On Thursday, January 15, 2026, at approximately 7:00 AM, the Connersville Police Department Patrol Division responded to the 1500 block of Grand Avenue regarding an initial report of theft that escalated into the discharge of a firearm.
Upon arrival, officers interviewed the complainant and transitioned the case to the Criminal Investigations Division. The investigation revealed that the homeowner was alerted to motion at his back door via a Ring Doorbell camera system. The homeowner retrieved a .20 gauge single-shot shotgun and confronted an unknown individual in the backyard, holding them at gunpoint while contacting 911.
While awaiting a police response, the subject attempted to flee the backyard by climbing over a wooden fence. At that time, the homeowner discharged the firearm at the fleeing subject, striking the fence near where the individual exited the property. Although the subject fled the area and their medical status is unknown, officers found no signs of injury at the scene.
An exhaustive search was conducted to locate the subject, which included the deployment of the K9 Division; however, the individual was not located. In a nearby alley, officers discovered a bag containing an identification card, and efforts are currently underway to locate the female identified by that documentation.
Due to the discharge of a weapon in a residential neighborhood while aiming at a fleeing subject, the homeowner, Jesse Wilson-Young, 22, of Connersville, was arrested for Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony. He was subsequently released to the custody of the Fayette County Jail. The Connersville Police Department will also be seeking an arrest warrant for the unidentified suspect for the offense of Theft.
In light of the timing of the call and the close proximity to the Middle School, the Fayette County School Corporation was immediately notified and took appropriate action to protect students during the incident. At this time, authorities believe there is no active threat to the community.
All arrested subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a Court of Law.
